There Was This Bird

While we were in Florida, there was this bird that came to hang out in the courtyard at the rehab center while we were visiting my mother-in-law.  Florida’s birds are really quite large and bold.  I give a bad review to the behavior of Florida’s birds.  I was a guest.  They should have left me alone.

So, anyhow, this bird just came walking up, bold as you please, and hung out in the area behind me.  http://media-files.gather.com/images/d453/d611/d744/d224/d96/f3/full.jpg
He was a rather large bird.  He might have been eighteen inches tall.  He had gross, long legs.  I was terrified, but I knew I owed it to my friends on the internet to document this beast.

This was about the time he decided to fly up onto the roof and survey his surroundings.  I’m not ashamed to admit that when he started flapping his wings, I ran across the courtyard, screaming.  All of the people with the broken legs and the stroke victims in the courtyard laughed at me.  I don’t think they realized how much danger we were all in.

Can’t you just see him pecking my eyes out with that spooky beak?

Then he flew back down and I ran and screamed again.  I couldn’t stop taking pictures, though.  I owed it to all of you.

He landed behind this bush and started making creepy movements with his neck.

That’s when I realized he was looking for lizards to eat, because that’s where the lizards were hanging out.  I guess it was good that he was eating lizards, although I only have problems with dead lizards.

Then he flew on top of the bush that was right behind me and I screamed and ran again.  I know he wanted to kill me.

Don’t lie.  I know you can see the evil and hunger in his beady little eye.

I managed to escape with my life, but barely.  I knew I had to make it back here to safety to fill the rest of you guys in on the dangers that lurk in Florida.

You’re welcome.

Mom, you are so silly. That bird isn’t even as tall as the blade of grass!

  2. Wanda Rizzuto

    You like my new avatar?

  3. Ina

That blade of grass was poking out of the middle of a 4 ft. bush! He wanted to kill me. Don’t try to discourage me.

I have to go see what you avatar is close up.

It’s Hong Kong Phooey jumping out of a filing cabinet.

  5. TheOtherIvy

There are many, many dangers lurking in Florida. Birds, gators, relatives.

  6. Ina

Sure, make fun of me. You’ll all feel bad when I come back with news that I’ve had my eyes poked out.

I’m with you. Little birds are scary. Big birds are a nightmare. Glad you got out alive!

  8. Ina

It terrified me so much that I’ve been hiding under my bed for the entire month we’ve been back. That’s why I haven’t been here. :D

    I’m just passing through…

Ina, I was a believer up til your last comment about hiding under the bed! I think the only reason for you to hide under the bed would be if you were looking for a specific pair of shoes you couldn’t find!

They have alligators, too. Only slightly less scary than that bird.

  12. David

My cats got excited about your photos.

  13. madamedonna

Oh for goodness sakes. Get a gun or some mace or something.

  14. Ina

Jackie ~ No alligator could scare me like that bird did!

David ~ This bird SCARED my cats!

Donna ~ It was too late! It had already seen me!

I like terns. They look pretty when they fly.

I loved the pictures. Too funny. You never cease to entertain me. Hope you are well, Ina!!!!

I hope the bird by my window who says “Ina Ina Ina!” doesn’t look like this one.

“Birds, gators, relatives” almost destroyed me.

    Happy Mother’s Day!

I know I answered this somewhere else, but I didn’t notice then how small that killer bird looked compared to the hibiscus blossoms. I know–closer vs. farther away, perspective, bright color, all that. Still–the poor bird seems tiny. :-)

  20. Ina

That bird wasn’t small! It was the size of a freaking ostrich!

This blog is hilarious. Found it doing a search on birdbaths and lizards. Looking forward to new posts!

  22. Ina

You guys are going to make me come back to this blog, aren’t you?

  23. Visitor

I think you have to. : ) Why did you stop?

  24. Ina

Too many blogs. I got overwhelmed. I’ll be better behaved. Girl Scout’s Honor.

  25. Visitor

This one’s the best. Don’t worry about the rest. (No pressure!)

  26. Ina

I was going to throw one from somewhere else out here later today.

  27. Visitor

Do you write more than one blog?

  28. Ina

Yeah, but it’s basically the same stuff from one place to another. I’m kind of an attention whore. I just got lazy here.

  29. Ina

This place is actually what I consider to be my favorite stuff. I was going through some of it this morning and realized how far behind I am with getting some of it out here. I put another one up this morning and I’ll try to put one or two new ones up every week until I’m caught up.

  30. Visitor

Oops, I bookmarked the wrong page and didn’t see that you posted new stuff! I will go look.

  31. Ina

Thanks! I appreciate that. It’s what keeps me coming back.
